Benazir Bhutto's Liquidation
The extermination of Benazir Bhutto from the Pakistani political landscape, due to the successful accomplishment of a murderous commission by bigots, is a mortal blow to the aspiration of the Pakistani citizenry, which was to witness the birth of democratic practices again in their homeland. Benazir, despite being excoriated in the past for the culture of favouritism and bribery that proliferated during her two tenures as Pakistani PM, commendably represented the thirst for democracy in most Pakistanis. She was one of the significant constituents of the Pakistani polity. She was indubitably one of the more moderate and saner voices emerging from Pakistan, in spite of her previous track record of backing the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan for strategic reasons during her two stints as PM. Her egalitarian vision of the future of Pakistan had no space for terrorists and fanatics and this was made amply evident in her addresses to the Pakistani public. Her convictions had admirably changed during her years in exile. She was probably the only Pakistani politician who candidly acknowledged the presence of Dawood Ibrahim, Maulana Azhar, etc. on Pakistani soil to the Indian media and promised their deliverance to India if their existence was confirmed. She was a liberal and tolerant personality, who had understood the futility of the policy of mollifying extremist forces, during her period in exile. She unambiguously deemed that the eradication of fanaticism, which had become the bane of Pakistan, must take place and she would be the one to initiate it if elected to the post of PM.
